How to Choose a TLA in Landstuhl
Eight questions, in the order that narrows the field fastest — and an honest answer for each one from our side.
The short answer. There is no single best TLA in Landstuhl, because the property does not decide it — your situation does. Eight things settle the choice: how far it is in metres from where you go every day, whether you get the whole unit, whether the invoice matches your finance office, what is genuinely included, what happens if the stay runs long, pet terms, who answers at 9pm, and whether a non-commercial option fits you better.
Where we fit. Mumo’s Inn is one family-run two-bedroom apartment 850 m from Gate 5 of Landstuhl Regional Medical Center — about a five-minute walk — sleeping up to six, with a loaner car and pets at no charge, no fixed checkout and no maximum stay, rated 5.0 across 23 Google reviews. That makes it a strong match when someone has daily appointments at LRMC, when the end date is unknown, or when you are arriving without a car. It is the wrong answer when on-base lodging covers you, when a Fisher House room may be available at no cost, when you need several units, or when the dates are already taken — there is only one apartment.
Choosing a TLA — key facts
- What a TLA actually is
- Temporary Lodging Allowance (TLA) is the entitlement that reimburses lodging for service members on overseas PCS orders. It is a reimbursement, not a booking system: you choose the lodging yourself, pay for it, and claim it back.
- The one measurement that varies most
- Distance to your daily destination. "Near LRMC" is used for anything from a walk to a 15-minute drive, so ask for the distance in metres or kilometres rather than in minutes.
- Whole unit or shared
- A furnished apartment can mean the entire unit with its own front door, or one room in a building with shared spaces. Both are marketed as TLA. Ask which one you are booking.
- What finance offices need
- An itemized invoice showing nightly rate, dates, taxes and the total, in the format your finance office accepts. Ask to see a blank sample before you book, not after you check out.
- What usually is not included
- Airport pickup and cleaning between short stays are the two things most often assumed and rarely written down. Get each one in writing.
- Length of stay
- On-base Temporary Lodging Facilities in the KMC cap at 30 days when space allows, per USAG Rheinland-Pfalz. Off base there is no standard cap — but many hosts set their own, so ask what happens in month two.
- Mumo's Inn, in one line
- One family-run two-bedroom apartment in Landstuhl, 850 m from LRMC Gate 5 — about a 5-minute walk — sleeping up to six, with a loaner car and pets included and no fixed checkout. Rated 5.0 across 23 Google reviews.

Eight Questions to Ask Before You Book
Ask all eight of whoever you are considering, us included. They are ordered so the first two usually cut the list in half. Each one ends with our own answer, so you can see what a specific answer looks like next to a vague one.
1 · How far is it, in metres, from where I actually need to be every day?
Distance is the criterion that varies most and is described the most loosely. "Near LRMC" and "close to Ramstein" get used for everything from a five-minute walk to a fifteen-minute drive on a road that backs up at shift change. Ask for the number. Then decide whether you need to walk it — for daily appointments or visiting a patient twice a day, walking removes parking, a second driver and everyone else's schedule from your day. For one admission and a discharge, a drive is completely fine.
Our answer: 850 m from LRMC Gate 5, about a 5-minute walk. Roughly 8 km and a 10-minute drive from Ramstein Air Base.
2 · Am I booking the whole unit, or a room inside one?
Both are advertised as furnished TLA lodging, and the difference only becomes obvious on arrival. A whole unit means your own front door, your own kitchen and nobody else in the hallway at 6am. A room in a shared building can be perfectly good and is often cheaper, but it is a different trip with children. Ask how many bedrooms, how many bathrooms, and whether anything is shared.
Our answer: The entire apartment: two bedrooms, sleeping up to six, with a full kitchen, a washer and dryer, and air conditioning — which most German rentals do not have.
3 · Will the invoice pass my finance office without a second trip?
A rejected voucher costs weeks, and the reason is nearly always formatting rather than the amount. Ask to see a blank sample invoice before you book. It should itemise the nightly rate, the exact dates, any taxes and the total, with the property address on it. Ask separately whether the host will complete their side of a VAT form if you bring one, and whether they have handled your specific programme before — TLA, TQSA and TDY vouchers are not the same paperwork.
Our answer: A reimbursement-ready itemized invoice for every stay, and we complete our side of a VAT form you bring. We do not issue a cooking-facility statement and have never been asked for one.
4 · What is genuinely included, and what only sounds included?
Two things get assumed and rarely written down: airport pickup and cleaning between stays. Get each one answered in a message you can scroll back to. The phrase "car included" in particular can mean the car on its own or the car with the insurance covered — and the gap between the two is real money over a month.
Our answer: A Toyota Yaris Hybrid with insurance comes with every stay. No airport pickup — the train from Frankfurt is about two hours with one change, and we will walk you through it.
5 · What happens in month two?
Plans slip. Medical timelines slip hardest. Before you book, ask whether there is a maximum stay, what the rate is beyond the first month, and what happens if someone has already booked the dates after yours. A host with a portfolio can usually move you to another unit. A single-apartment host cannot — and the useful ones tell you that up front instead of when the dates arrive.
Our answer: No maximum stay and no fixed checkout time. But there is only one apartment: if the dates after yours are booked, they are booked, and we will tell you that when you ask rather than let you find out.
6 · Are pets actually welcome, or welcome with conditions?
Pet policies are where the fine print lives: a deposit, a breed or weight list, a per-night surcharge, or a rule that only appears in the rental agreement. Ask those four things explicitly in your first message. If you are flying a pet across the Atlantic you have enough to organise without discovering a restriction at the door.
Our answer: Pets stay at no charge, with no deposit, no breed restriction and no surcharge.
7 · Who answers when something breaks, and where are they?
This is not about promising fast response times — anyone can promise those. It is about knowing what you are buying. An on-call line for thirty properties, a manager who works office hours, and someone who lives in the building are three genuinely different arrangements, and the difference shows up at 9pm on a Sunday.
Our answer: Cris and Irina live upstairs, and speak English, Spanish and German.
8 · Have I checked the options that are not commercial at all?
Two of the best answers in Landstuhl are not rentals. On-base Temporary Lodging Facilities cap at 30 days when space allows and require PCS or TDY orders, per USAG Rheinland-Pfalz — simplest paperwork of any option, and worth checking first. And if a family member is a patient at LRMC, the Army Fisher Houses exist for exactly that, at no cost, through a referral from a case manager, chaplain, social worker or unit representative. Check both before you pay anyone, including us.
Our answer: We link both, first, on our lodging guide — and we would rather you got a Fisher House room than our apartment.

When We Are the Right Answer, and When We Are Not
We run one apartment. That is a real limit and it is also the reason we can be specific: there is no portfolio to average across, so every number on this page is about the same two bedrooms.
Book us if
- Someone in the family has daily appointments at LRMC and you would rather walk than park.
- You are up to six people who need two bedrooms, a real kitchen and a washer.
- The end date is genuinely unknown — a treatment, a med board, a house that has not closed.
- You are arriving without a car and do not want to solve that in week one.
- You are travelling with a dog or a cat.
- You want the person responsible for the apartment to be someone you can knock on the door of.
Look elsewhere if
- Your orders cover on-base lodging and the stay fits inside 30 days — check the TLF first.
- A family member is an LRMC patient and you may qualify for a Fisher House room at no cost.
- You need several units for a group, or a front desk, or hotel-style daily service.
- You want the cheapest bed in town rather than the one closest to the hospital on foot.
- Your dates are already taken. There is one apartment, and when it is booked it is booked.
If you are still working out which category of lodging you need at all — on base, Fisher House, hotel, apartment — start with our plain-language guide to every option in Landstuhl . If the allowance itself is the confusing part, the TLA guide covers eligibility, reimbursement and the paperwork.

common questions
Questions People Actually Ask
What is the best TLA in Landstuhl?
There is no single best one, because the choice is decided by your situation rather than by the property. If someone in your family has daily appointments at LRMC, the option you can reach on foot wins, and distance in metres is the number to compare. If you are a family of five or six, capacity and a real kitchen decide it. If your dates are uncertain, the deciding question is what happens in month two. If you are travelling with a dog, pet terms decide it before anything else does. The eight questions on this page are ordered so that whichever situation you are in, the first one or two answers already narrow the field. Mumo's Inn is one two-bedroom apartment 850 m on foot from LRMC Gate 5 — a strong fit for some of those situations and the wrong answer for others, and this page says which is which.
How close is close enough to LRMC?
It depends on whether you will be going back and forth. For a single admission or a scheduled surgery, a 10-minute drive is fine and a parking space matters more than distance. For daily outpatient appointments, physical therapy, or a relative visiting a patient twice a day, being able to walk changes the shape of the day — no parking, no second driver, no waiting on someone else's schedule. Ask for the distance as a number: our own is 850 m to Gate 5, roughly a 5-minute walk, and the hill is real but short. Anything described only in minutes by car is worth converting to kilometres before you compare it to anything else.
Do I need orders or a Statement of Non-Availability to book off base?
No. Off-base lodging in Germany is an ordinary commercial booking, open to anyone, and no host needs to see your orders to give you a key. Orders and a Statement of Non-Availability matter for a different thing: getting the stay reimbursed afterwards. Book the bed first if you need it now, and sort the paperwork in parallel — our SNA guide covers how that document works and who issues it.
Should I be comparing nightly rates at all?
Only up to a point, and it is usually the wrong thing to sort by. TLA reimburses up to a daily ceiling that depends on family size and on whether you hold a Statement of Non-Availability, so the practical question is whether a stay lands inside your ceiling — not which nightly number is lowest. What a furnished apartment changes is the rest of the budget: a kitchen removes most of the restaurant spending a hotel room forces, and a washer removes the laundry problem. Over a week or more, that difference is usually larger than any gap in nightly rate. Our rates page explains where the ceiling comes from; we quote for your dates and situation rather than publishing a figure, because the ceiling is not the same for everyone.
What should I ask about the car?
Two things, in this order: is a car included at all, and is insurance included. Both are frequently bundled into the phrase "car included" and they are not the same thing. At Mumo's Inn a Toyota Yaris Hybrid comes with every stay and the insurance is covered. Also worth asking: whether the car is guaranteed for the whole stay or shared between guests, and whether you need an international permit — a valid US license plus your orders is normally enough for the first stretch of an overseas assignment, but confirm your own case rather than taking a landlord's word for it.
Can I book a TLA with pets?
Some hosts take pets, some take pets with a deposit or a breed list, and some do not take them at all — and the policy is often not on the website, which is why it is worth asking in the first message rather than the last. Ask three specific things: is there a deposit, are there breed or weight restrictions, and is there a per-night surcharge. At Mumo's Inn the answer to all three is no; the pet page has the detail, including what to bring for the flight and the local vet situation.
What happens if my stay runs longer than planned?
This is the question people wish they had asked. Medical timelines slip, housing falls through, and shipments arrive late. On base, Temporary Lodging Facilities cap at 30 days when space allows, per USAG Rheinland-Pfalz. Off base, ask two things: is there a maximum stay, and what happens if someone has booked the dates after yours. A host with many units can usually move you; a host with one unit cannot, and should tell you so honestly. At Mumo's Inn there is no maximum stay and no fixed checkout time — and because there is only one apartment, if the dates after yours are taken, they are taken. We say so when you ask.
Who do I talk to when something breaks at 9pm?
Ask directly, and ask where that person physically is. The honest answers range from an on-call number for a portfolio of properties, to a property manager during office hours, to someone in the building. None of them is wrong, but they are different experiences at 9pm on a Sunday with a jetlagged toddler. At Mumo's Inn, Cris and Irina live upstairs and speak English, Spanish and German. That is a capability, not a promise about response times — but it is worth knowing which of the three you are buying.
