Temporary Lodging Allowance (TLA) is a housing allowance that covers temporary lodging costs for military service members and their families during a PCS move to or from an overseas duty station. In the Kaiserslautern Military Community (KMC), TLA applies to families stationed at Ramstein Air Base, Landstuhl Regional Medical Center (LRMC), and surrounding installations.

No — not to book. A Statement of Non-Availability authorises the reimbursement of an off-base stay; it is not a condition of reserving one, and we take bookings with or without it. Where it matters: if you are Active Duty on PCS orders, the Ramstein Lodging Office (DSN 480-4920 / 06371-47-4920) issues the letter when the on-base TLF cannot take you, and you bring it when you file your claim. If you are TDY, a GS civilian, a contractor, or visiting someone at LRMC, requirements vary — ask your unit or finance office. We cannot issue the letter ourselves, and we will never pretend otherwise.

No — TLA isn't an on-base-only benefit. When the on-base Temporary Lodging Facility is full, or you've reached its 30-day stay cap, the Lodging Office issues a Statement of Non-Availability that authorizes an off-base stay reimbursed at your TLA rate. An itemized invoice with your nightly rate, dates, and guest information — the document finance actually asks for. If you bring a VAT form, we fill in our side of it. And if something on the claim looks odd, ask us on WhatsApp and we will walk through it with you.

That is walking distance rather than a drive, which makes it practical for families with medical appointments, outprocessing, or anyone who wants the convenience of walking to the hospital without needing a car.

Ramstein Air Base is approximately 8 kilometers from Landstuhl, about a 10-minute drive via the L363. To make your commute easy, a complimentary Toyota Yaris Hybrid loaner car is included with every stay, always, so you can get around the KMC area while you search for permanent housing. Prefer not to drive? There are local bus stops within a short walk, and Landstuhl train station connects you onward to Kaiserslautern and beyond.

Frankfurt Airport is about 130 km from Landstuhl, roughly 90 minutes by car via the A6 autobahn. You can rent a car at the airport or take a train to Landstuhl Bahnhof (the local train station). From the station it is about a 35-minute walk to us, so with luggage take a taxi — it is a short ride. We are happy to help coordinate your arrival.
