TLA vs. On-Base Lodging at Ramstein — Which Should You Choose?

There's no wrong answer here — the on-base Temporary Lodging Facility (TLF) and off-base TLA housing both exist to cover the same gap: the weeks between landing in Germany and moving into permanent quarters. If the TLF has a room for your dates and you'd rather stay inside the gate, that's a perfectly good call — you're closer to in-processing and don't have to think about a commute.
The honest problem is availability. The TLF fills fast during PCS season, and it caps every stay at 30 days — so families who are still house-hunting past that point have to move regardless of what they'd prefer. When that happens, the Ramstein Lodging Office issues a Statement of Non-Availability, and TLA covers you off-base at the same allowance you'd have used on-base.

The Money Works the Same Either Way
The part that surprises a lot of first-time PCS families: TLA isn't only for off-base stays that "fail" to get on-base lodging — it's the mechanism that covers you wherever the TLF can't. If the on-base facility is full for your dates, or you've run out its 30-day cap, the Ramstein Lodging Office (DSN 480-4920, civilian 06371-47-4920) issues a Statement of Non-Availability, and your TLA reimbursement follows you off-base.

Is off-base lodging actually reimbursable?
Yes. Once the on-base TLF can't take you, TLA covers off-base lodging the same as it would cover the TLF — that's what the allowance is for. Our nightly rate is designed to stay within the DoD lodging ceiling for the area, and we provide reimbursement-ready, itemized invoices your finance office will accept.
What happens if the on-base TLF is full?
This is one of the most common reasons families end up off-base in the first place. If the Temporary Lodging Facility is full — or you've already hit its 30-day stay cap — the Ramstein Lodging Office (DSN 480-4920 / 06371-47-4920) can issue a Statement of Non-Availability so your stay with us is still covered under TLA.
Do I need a Statement of Non-Availability?
Mostly if you're Active Duty on PCS orders filing a TLA claim for off-base lodging. TDY personnel, GS civilians on TQSA, and contractors often have different requirements — check with your unit or finance office. Either way, you don't need the letter in hand to book with us. Is off-base more expensive out of pocket?
Not by design. Mumo's Inn prices to align with the published TLA lodging ceiling for the Landstuhl/Ramstein area, so most guests are reimbursed in full for lodging rather than paying a gap out of pocket. Always confirm your specific authorized rate with your finance office before booking.
Can I switch from on-base to off-base mid-stay?
Yes — it happens often. If you started at the on-base TLF and hit its 30-day cap, or a room opened up somewhere else and plans changed, the Lodging Office can issue an SNA covering the rest of your TLA days off-base. Reach out and we'll work around your dates.
