What to Arrange Before You Arrive
An LRMC-bound trip rarely looks like a normal PCS. Sometimes it's a patient and a Non-Medical Attendant (NMA) flying in together for treatment. Sometimes it's a family member called in on short notice for a medevac, a birth, or a med-board — from downrange, from another base, from a duty station that had no warning either. However you got here, the timeline is medical, not a moving calendar, and it can run longer than a typical TDY.
Before you fly, get what you can confirmed: your orders or invitational travel authorization, whether the stay falls under TLA, TQSA, or a similar travel authorization, and a rough sense of how long treatment, recovery, or evaluation might take. The one thing you can lock down before you land: where you're sleeping the first night. On-base options and Fisher House fill up fast and aren't guaranteed — booking off-base lodging ahead of time means you land, get the patient settled, and go straight to a real bed instead of working the phones from an airport gate.

The Short Pre-Departure Checklist
Nobody needs another 40-point PCS list at a moment like this. These are the few things that are genuinely harder to fix once you have landed:
Prescriptions. Bring enough of anything either of you takes to cover the trip plus a buffer for a timeline that slips — because they usually do. German pharmacies (Apotheken) work differently than a US pharmacy counter, so ask the patient's care team before you fly what happens if you need a refill here, rather than finding out on a Sunday.
Documents, on paper and on your phone. Orders or your travel authorization, ID, insurance and referral paperwork, and the contact details of your patient liaison. Photograph all of it. The apartment has a printer if you need a hard copy once you are here, but scanning something at 2 a.m. in an airport is a different experience.
Power and phone. Germany runs 230V on Type F sockets — bring adapters for chargers and any medical device, and check the device's voltage range rather than assuming. Sort roaming or an eSIM before you leave so you can be reached the moment you land.
Some cash. Cards are widely accepted, but plenty of small German businesses — bakeries, taxis, the odd doctor's office — still prefer cash. Having a little euro on you removes a small, stupid problem on a day you do not need one.
And the bed. Confirm where you are sleeping before you board. What Landing Day Actually Looks Like
Most people arrive at Frankfurt Airport (FRA). From there it is roughly two hours to Landstuhl by train, usually with one change — check your exact connection on Deutsche Bahn once flights are booked, because timetables change and we would rather you read it from the source. Landstuhl station is about a 20-minute walk from the apartment, or a short taxi ride with luggage.
You will land jet-lagged into a time zone that is six or more hours ahead of wherever you started, probably having barely slept. That is not the moment to sign a rental car contract. The Toyota Yaris Hybrid included with your stay is already at the apartment — insurance covered, no deposit, you cover fuel — so you can collect the keys after you have slept rather than before.
Once you are here, the hospital is 850 meters away — about a 5-minute walk to Gate 5. If the patient is already admitted, you can be at the bedside within minutes of dropping your bags, and back again whenever you need to.
